"Hey Michael, I wanted to drop you a note and convey to you my thanks for the Libertarian Leadership seminar that was held at the Colorado Libertarian Convention. The class was fun, informative, and the information was presented in a way to make it easy to use it in my upcoming race. I will certainly be attending your full training when you return to CO in the next couple of months."
-Wayne Harlos, Vice-Chairman, Libertarian Party of Colorado
"C Michael Pickens' campaign class was one of the best I have ever attended. It was both very insightful as well as entertaining. The information was presented in a thoughtful and consistent manner. The class delved into philosophy and psychology, what candidates should look for, why they should press, what they should ask, and how to get the best results possible. I would highly recommend that all Libertarian candidates attend one of his classes."
-Matthew Hess, 2014 Libertarian Candidate for Colorado Governor
"C Michael Pickens, I wanted to say how delighted I was to meet you in person, and thank you so much for your generosity this past weekend with both your time and your knowledge & experience. The 3 hour seminar on Sunday was way too short - I enjoyed it so much! I found the information to be very valuable on many levels, especially for me as a newbie candidate, and the concepts you presented will help in that regard as well as in other aspects of life. I have been looking over the notes I took on Sunday & have quite a few ideas that I'm enthusiastic to implement in the weeks to come so that I can share all the lessons on liberty and campaigning you taught with my campaign team and potential voters. I am really excited that you'll be back next month & we can have the benefit of your expertise for a full day! Thanks again!"
-Kim Tavendale, Libertarian Candidate HD33 Colorado
"I attended the abridged version of the Libertarian Leadership seminar at the 2016 Colorado Libertarian Party Convention. It was a fantastic experience! Being relatively new to taking an active role in politics, it was an essential reality check and answered all of my known questions plus a few more.
I recommend any liberty leaning individual to attend this seminar. Scratch that! I would recommend the Libertarian Leadership seminar to anyone that cares about his fellow man. C Michael Pickens does an excellent job of explaining Liberty and why it is important for each one of us. At the end of this seminar, you will truly understand how to promote a government by and for the people!
I look forward to attending the full length version next month."
-Matthew Smith, Libertarian Activist
"Michael Pickens’ seminar is unlike any training I have ever done. He not only focuses on how to run an effective campaign, but gives party leaders and volunteers the tools they need to inspire people to become lifelong Libertarian activists."
-Nathan Grabau, Libertarian Activist & Former LPCO Chairman
"The level 1 Libertarian Leadership Workshop has a great base of information, ideas and motivation to hit the pavement and spread the message of liberty. The combination of in and post-workshop content along with personal follow-up gives the attendee opportunity and support to reach the next level."
-Zack Banks LPWA Region 5 Director Vancouver, WA
"My name is Chris Rockhold, and I am a Libertarian candidate and activist. I have been a Libertarian since high school. I ran for the Washington State legislature 17th district seat in 2014.
The Libertarian Leadership program is one of the most phenomenal tools I have come across to assist candidates and activists. Even if you’re new to the political scene, or you’ve had some level of experience, you will find tremendous value in this program. Whether you need help with fundraising, finding volunteers, or just fresh ideas on where you should be spending your energy most efficiently, this program will be of immense benefit.
I have attended several workshops, and made use of numerous videos within the program. I can tell you, personally, that this is a tool that every candidate should have in his or her belt."
"I have a fear of heights. It’s a healthy fear, if you ask me. Anything over 10 feet can induce weakness in the knees and labored breathing. However, I do love roller coasters. I’m not exactly sure why it’s easier to overcome my phobia in that environment. I suspect it has something to do with the system and design of it all. As a former mechanical engineering major I have an innate trust in the safety of such well thought-out structures, safety features, backups, and redundancies. While the highest hills and fastest speeds can invoke a thrilling sense of danger, I can enjoy that excitement safe in the belief that nothing terribly bad is going to happen.
After roughly two thirds of the way into my first campaign for public office I am realizing just how similar this candidate-thing is to the roller coaster experience. That cliché is validated often on the campaign trail. At times I have experienced the lows, where your stomach feels like it has dropped out of your body. Like the time when the editorial board of an ultra-left newspaper screamed at me for my stance on a local gun control initiative, or when I booked a local hotel ball room for a meet-and-greet and no one showed up. And there have been better days where I’ve felt the high of a successful event. Like speaking with a local business group where the mediator turned to her colleague and whispered “he’s certainly done his homework”, or seeing my volunteer base grow so that at 14 weeks into the campaign I saw my largest group of volunteers to date canvassing local precincts simultaneously.
As I think back on the experience so far, what strikes me most is that the same aspects of the roller coaster that allow me to enjoy that intimidating situation are also present in this current situation. It’s the well thought out structure, the backups, and safety net. You see, in Washington the Libertarian party underwent some thoughtful changes in 2014. Now a more de-centralized organization has been developed in order to provide more immediate and localized support to candidates and volunteers. Well motivated and qualified individuals have stepped up to provide support which ensures the system is working as designed. A very important part of that system, which has helped me greatly, is the Libertarian Leadership Workshop. This training series has helped me increase my confidence and focus on my purpose. It is a vital piece of the resurgence of the Libertarian Party in Washington. Best of all, this resurgence has become a beacon for liberty lovers from all over. Here they can find a welcoming community of like-minded individuals. Even long time members of the “old guard” have been active in researching issues and posting articles, which can be an invaluable resource for candidates who often work full-time jobs and have limited leisure time.
In Washington State the Libertarian party is growing, developing a robust organizational structure, and implementing a solid support network. All of this effort is attracting new, and returning, liberty-minded activists and supporters. Thanks to the Libertarian Leadership Workshop and other efforts the Libertarian Party of Washington is a safe place to attempt more intimidating endeavors. Running for office, making phone calls, speaking at city council meetings, canvassing a neighborhood, or other political activism can be daunting but within the right organization, with the right systems in place, it can be the most thrilling ride of your life. And like all great thrill rides that have their sensational names, I call this one “The Screaming Patriot”. Welcome aboard."
Paul Addis, Libertarian Candidate for Washington State Lieutenant Governor
